An island devoted to the sea

The island of Mauritius lies surrounded by a halo of coral in the Indian Ocean. Occupied in turn by the Dutch, French and British, it has always been a berthing-place for navigators.

Independent since 1968, Mauritius is still at the crossroads for the ships plying their route between Africa and Asia. The boats fishing in the Indian Ocean come to the island to transship their catches.

With its 1,865 km2 and 1.2 million inhabitants, Mauritius is a tiny country that can, however, offer all the infrastructure and services needed for business.

Its insularity has given rise to a vibrant fishing tradition. Armed with this experience, the Mauritian Government has decided to develop the seafood sector into a new pillar for growth of the local economy.
